Councilwoman Letitia James: Anti-Abortion Billboard Offensive

In February 2011 on February 28, 2011 at 11:17 am

By Associated Press on February 24, 2011NEW YORK — A black New York City Council member says an anti-abortion billboard unveiled to coincide with Black History Month is “highly offensive.”

The sign in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood reads: “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.”

The campaign is by a group called Life Always. A board member, the Rev. Stephen Broden, who’s also black, likens abortion to “a genocidal plot.”

Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James, of the Working Families Party, calls the timing misguided. She tells the NYDailyNews.com that comparing abortion to genocide “is highly offensive.”

The group says its message counters what it calls Planned Parenthood’s “targeting of minority neighborhoods.”

Planned Parenthood, in turn, calls it an “offensive and condescending effort to stigmatize and shame African-American woman.”

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Wednesday condemned the violence in Libya as “outrageous and unacceptable” and said he was dispatching Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Geneva on Monday for international talks aimed at stopping the violence.

Obama said he was studying a “full range of options” to pressure Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s regime to halt attacks against Libyans as violent clashes spread throughout the North African country. He said the options included possible sanctions that the U.S. could take with its allies.

“We are doing everything we can to protect American citizens,” Obama said in brief remarks at the White House, his first public comments after days of violence in Libya.

“We strongly condemn the use of violence in Libya,” Obama said. He spoke in the wake of uprisings in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia. The week-old protests in Libya have been met by a far more brutal response from militiamen loyal to Gadhafi.

Obama broke his public silence on the violence after the U.S. succeeded in beginning evacuations of American citizens from the chaotic situation.

Controversial Anti-Abortion Billboard Shocks NY SoHo Residents

In February 2011 on February 28, 2011 at 11:12 am

A three-story billboard has drawn criticism from SoHo residents for its abortion message aimed directly at minority women.

NEW YORK-A Billboard that says, “The Most Dangerous Place For Black People Is The Womb” has popped in the trendy SoHo area of NYC. The billboard is made by by Heroic Media, a faith-based non-profit out of Austin Texas that promotes alternatives to abortion.

The Billboard is angering NYC residents according to DNA Info:

Mae Collazo, 38, who works across the street from the billboard, said she found the billboard incredibly offensive.

“I don’t like it all, what is that supposed to mean?” said Collazo, who is African American, “It makes it sound like all we do is abort our children.”

Collazo added that she didn’t think the higher percentage of abortions registered for African American women in New York necessarily reflect what is actually going on in the community, and questioned the source of the statistics and whether abortions conducted at private clinics are included in the statistics.

SOHO — An anti-abortion billboard that went up in SoHo earlier this week has drawn swift criticism from residents and officials for its racial targeting of minority women.

“The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb,” reads the inflammatory ad sponsored by the Dallas-based pro-life group “Life Always.”

The three-story billboard at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Watts Street features an elementary-school aged African-American girl looking out at viewers with a plaintive expression, wearing a bow in her hair and a sleeveless pink jumper dress. The ad directs passersby to the group’s website, thatsabortion.com.

Life Always leader, Pastor Stephen Broden, who is African-American, said that his group intentionally released a billboard that would elicit a reaction.

“The black community is oblivious to what is going on with this practice,” Broden, 58, said about abortion rates in the African-American community.

“This is far from hyperbole, these are facts and statistically back up that abortion is having an impact on the demography of African-Americans,” he said.

According to New York City’s latest Vital Statistics report with data from 2009, two out of five pregnancies in New York City end in an abortion, giving the city an overall abortion rate of 41 percent.

Among black women in New York City, the abortion rate is reportedly 59.8 percent, while the abortion rate for Hispanic women is 41.3 percent and the rate for white women is 20.4 percent. The rate for abortions among Asian women in New York is 22.7 percent.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn both criticized the ad, with de Blasio calling for it to come down.

“To refer to a woman’s legal right to an abortion as a ‘genocidal plot’ is not only absurd, but it is offensive to women and to communities of color,” Quinn wrote in a statement of Broden’s claim that the high abortion rates among minority women amounted to genocide.

But some passersby agreed with the ad.

Patti D’Agostini, 48, who works at the Door Youth Center on Broome Street, said she works with many teen mothers.

“I don’t believe in abortion,” D’Agostini said. “Kids shouldn’t be having sex until they’re 18 anyways.”

Broden said his organization will remain in the city for another three weeks before kicking off similar ad campaigns in six other cities around the country.

Kanye West’s “All Of The Lights” Video Causes Seizures

By The Urban DailyKanye West "All Of The Lights" videoKanye West’s brand new “All Of The Lights” video is under fire from Epilepsy Action, a UK based group, who say that the bright, flashy video can cause seizures.  The video was temporarily removed from YouTube, but has since been re-uploaded with a disclaimer at the beginning.

The group sent the video to Cambridge Research Systems who analyzed the clip using the Harding FPA test.  The test analyzes video to determine whether or not it can cause seizures.  The results stated that at the rate at which lights flash throughout the clip, it could definitely cause seizures.

“We have today had confirmation that it contains material that may cause seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy,” Epilepsy Action said in a statement.

“Of com regulations mean that this video should not be broadcast on UK television,” Epilepsy Action continued. “However, it is available online in a number of places. We are in the process of trying to contact Kanye West’s agent, YouTube and other online sources of the video to ask that they take it down. We have also contacted MTV and other TV stations to make them aware of the issue.”

Wow:

Mariah Carey is on top of the world preparing for the birth of her twins – a boy and a girl – but her down-and-out sister Alison – a mother of four – is so strapped for cash she’s selling herself as an “adult escort,” The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

Alison Carey Scott – a former drug addict who’s been arrested twice for prostitution and is also HIV positive – is shopping herself on the Long Island, N.Y., edition of backpage.com,a free internet classified service used by many hookers. While the adult entertainment ad touts a 36-year-old sexy blonde named “Denise,” The ENQUIRER learned the ad is actually for 49-year-old Alison, who charges $250 an hour for house calls. The picture is fake, natch.

“You have no idea how badly I need cash right now,” a distraught Alison admitted to The ENQUIRER. “But I’m not having ‘sex for money’! I provide personal companionship and erotic body rubs.” In an emotional and candid conversation, The ENQUIRER spoke to Mariah’s sister when she showed up Jan. 21 to meet a male business traveler in room 431 at the Hilton Garden Inn hotel in Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

Dressed in jeans and a baggy sweater, Alison said: “I’ve been forced to do this because my family refuses to help me financially. “For weeks, I was driving in a vehicle with practically no brakes. It was unsafe, so I reached out to my family for help, but they basically ignored me. I wish I didn’t have to make a living by hooking up with strangers on the Internet, but sometimes I feel like I don’t have any other choice.”

Alison’s pathetic plight stands in sharp contrast to her sister Mariah’s fairytale life. The 41-year-old, five-time Grammy winner is expecting twins this spring with her 30-year-old husband Nick Cannon.

In 2000, Alison tried to find a publisher for her explosive tell-all book about her famous sister – reportedly dubbing her a “vain and heartless multimillionaire,” but Mariah’s legal team allegedly put a stop to the publication. Things continued to go downhill for Alison, who was busted for soliciting prostitution in June 2005 after offering to have sex with an undercover officer for $250. It was her second prostitution arrest within a 10-week period.

Alison, who had her first child at 15, has battled HIV since the 1990s. In 1995, the sisters’ mother Patricia Carey – fearing for the safety of Alison’s then-7-year-old son – reportedly triggered a custody battle by refusing to hand him back to her troubled daughter after a family visit. A court later awarded them joint custody.

Although the sisters are still at odds, mom-to-be Mariah has reportedly paid for Alison to go to rehab multiple times. “Regardless of how it might appear, I am trying very hard to turn my life around,” Alison told The ENQUIRER. “I’ve been clean and sober for 14 months. I attend drug and alcohol support meetings, receive counseling and have a sponsor to lean on. I’m also enrolled in college, which I hope will someday provide a better life and financial independence.

SMH at her saying… “You have no idea how badly I need cash right now, but I’m not having ‘sex for money’! I provide personal companionship and erotic body rubs.”

Club Apologizes For Discriminating Against Black Harvard Students

In February 2011, Nonsensical News on February 28, 2011 at 10:49 am

By Associated PressBOSTON — The owners of a Boston nightclub issued a public apology and agreed Friday to pay a $30,000 fine to settle allegations that it abruptly shut down an event after the annual Harvard-Yale football game because most of the attendees were black.
Some students said they were turned away from the November event after employees at the Cure Lounge complained that a large group of young black people in line would attract “local gang bangers.”

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley called the club staff’s behavior “the essence of racial stereotyping” and said it violated public accommodations and consumer protection laws.

“Massachusetts businesses cannot refuse to host events because of racial reasons,” Coakley said. “In this case, club staff made harmful and ill-conceived conclusions based on the simple fact that most of the guests were black.”

Coakley’s office and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination filed a complaint and consent judgment Friday in Suffolk Superior Court. Coakley said the complaint resolves a lawsuit against Paige Hospitality Inc., the owner and operator of Cure Lounge.Under the consent judgment, Paige Hospitality must send its staff to annual anti-discrimination training and pay the state $30,000, which will distributed by Coakley’s office mainly to groups that support black students seeking higher education opportunities.

After court approval of the consent judgment, Paige Hospitality issued a public apology, which will remain posted on the Cure Lounge website for 30 days.

Three black graduates of Harvard College hosted the event, Coakley said. Harvard alumni, as well as graduate students from both Harvard and Yale, received invitations to buy tickets to the event. About 400 people bought tickets before the sold-out event.

The event began at 10 p.m. Nov. 20. During the next hour, guests arrived and there were no problems inside or outside of the club, but at about 11:15 p.m., Cure Lounge abruptly ended the event and told all of the guests that they needed to leave, according to the complaint.

In its apology, the club said it “does not tolerate racism.”

“The owners, managers and employees of Cure Lounge wish to extend our deepest apologies to all of those affected, both directly and indirectly, by the unfortunate events that occurred on the evening of November 20, 2010,” the apology states.

It goes on to apologize for statements made on its behalf by its public relations group in the days after the event. “Those statements were uninformed and in no way reflect the values or beliefs of the owners, managers, and employees of the Cure Lounge,” the apology states.

In a story published in The Boston Globe on Nov. 27, 2010, George Regan Jr., chairman of a Boston public relations firm, denied that the club management had done anything wrong.

Regan said the club had worked out an agreement with promoters of the event that everyone who attended the two-night event would have to show identification to prove they were affiliated with Harvard or Yale. He said that on the first night, all of the guests presented identification.

Regan told the Globe that on the second night, “There were a lot of people in line known to police and police and security circles as bad people, OK? They probably couldn’t spell the word ‘Harvard.’”

Regan told the Globe that the staff shut down the club because of safety concerns when guests waiting in line did not show identification and the promoters refused to cooperate with that request. He denied that club workers used the phrase “gangbangers” when speaking with alumni or students.

In a brief telephone interview Friday, Regan said he does not believe he owes anyone an apology.

“This incident happened over three months ago. I only repeated what I was told by the owners. It wasn’t until the attorney general’s Office started to put pressure on them that the owners wanted to rewrite the facts, for obvious reasons,” Regan said.

Managers of the nightclub did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Social Security Prepares For Possible Government Shutdown

In February 2011 on February 28, 2011 at 10:47 am

By Charles Dixon

WASHINGTON D.C – Officials with the Social Security Administration will hold talks in the coming week to discuss what to do in case of a potential “government shutdown” on March 4.

Lawmakers have been unable to reach a bipartisan agreement on how to fund the government for the remaining fiscal year of 2011. Democrats and Republicans continue to disagree on budget cuts, and without a compromise, many government agencies will be forced to close their doors.

Washington Post reports:

Planning ahead for a potential shutdown is prudent, considering the chaos that ensued during shutdowns in 1995 and 1996. During the first shutdown, about 4,800 agency employees stayed on the job to ensure beneficiaries continued receiving checks, according to a Congressional Research Service report.

The spending measure passed by the House early Saturday would reduce SSA’s budget by about $625 million compared to last year, meaning the agency may need to furlough workers up to 10 days, Skwierczynski said. If necessary, the union is hoping furloughed workers could take their forced unpaid leave all at once in order to apply for unemployment benefits, he said.

A shutdown would have effects on the distribution of many other federal benefits as well including welfare checks, veteran payments, and unemployment.

Can Black Women Get Along?

In February 2011, Nonsensical News on February 28, 2011 at 10:43 am

by Kelly L. Jackson

It seems like our favorite shows and channels have painted a scary picture of black women that America is liking…Loud, Confrontational and Dramatic.  Are we?  And why when there’s 2 or more of us, its a big mess?  Why is that?

The upcoming Donald Trump show, “Celebrity Apprentice” that premieres next month(March 6) features the female contestants LaToya Jackson, Star Jones and NeNe Leaks from the Real Housewives of Atlanta who happen to be black.  There’s already some pre-hype from the show highlighting major drama and cattiness between Nene Leaks and former “View” host and attorney, Star Jones.

Both have gone on record and given their take on the feud.  According to a recent AOL Black Voices interview with Jawn Murray, Ms. Jones commented on the situation.

She stated,

“This actually saddens me. Black women trashing other black women all for the sake of personal aggrandizement. When the cast was first announced, I was both excited and concerned. Excited that this was going to be the most diverse cast in prime-time reality programming and concerned because the media immediately started the drumroll of “can this many black women get along?” The four of us actually chatted about the unique opportunity we had to influence the perception of black women and the way we interact. We each brought something different to the show, so I had hoped we could avoid falling into the typical “snake charmer in your face loud bombastic black woman” stereotypical box that was expected. Some of us were more successful at our quest than others. I knew I wanted to approach the game intelligently, professionally and strategically, while keeping in mind my true purpose for being there – winning money for my charity.”

The Real Housewives reality star went on record during an interview with NBC’s Today Show and expressed her feelings towards Star and said,

“The whole sneaky, back stabbing, forming alliances, I just don’t like…she may have a new body, but she doesn’t have a new brain. You still think the same even though you lose weight so I don’t know.”

Was all of this necessary?  No matter what side you’re on Team Star or Team Nene, it saddens me that the media got wind of another feud amongst two black women and revealed the negative side of them bickering.  Could their disagreement and/or mis-communication been dealt with different?  Privately?

Since coming on the scene a few years ago, it appears as if Mrs. Leaks likes Drama. But is she “keeping it real” or just making noise to get attention at any cost?  We all know it takes two to tangle and three sides to every story but what’s your opinion on Star Jones vs. Nene Leaks? Is it Ego, Pride or just Disrespect between the two?  What’s your thoughts?
